Wendy Thompson and Jules Petyt are Luluz Tutu an acoustic duo who aim to bring a return to simpler values and honest songs.
Formed in the year 2000 they have played many local venues, performing a mixture of Jules' songs and cover versions of tracks by artists such as Sandy Denny, bob Dylan and Mercury Rev.
They are currently recording the follow up to their self titled debut CD which was recorded in Wendys' kitchen.
Their band manifesto is a determination to bring back some of the values of the folk song to modern music. Where is the mystery and legend in song today? So much music today lacks both imagination and emotion, that a return to more traditional values has to be healthy. Jules and Wendy share a love of traditional music from all over the world, and try to bring as much of those sensibilities as possible to their work.
That's not to say that modern ideas and technologies are ignored. the band use many modern techniques in their recordings, even incorporating samples into their show stopper "Shady Lady". Both Jules and Wendy also play in a rock band The Collective, playing many gigs and recording 5 CD's so far.
They have one CD available - "Luluz Tutu", which featured 8 songs written by Jules, including "The Devil" and "High Hopes". Also included were 2 of the cover versions that the band play live - Sandy Dennys' "Rising For The Moon" and the Byrds "Ballad Of Easy Rider". The instruments are sparse on the CD in an attempt to capture the bands live sound, and are all played by Jules apart from the bass on "Rising For The Moon" which is played by Collective member Glenn Young. The band have just completed their "Nevertheless" EP, and have several tracks ready for their next album which will mainly be made up of new Jules' songs such as "Another Year" and "My Half". This CD will once more be dominated by vocals and acoustic guitar, but a few tracks feature more instrumentation than "Luluz Tutu" did, and include contributions from several current and ex members of The Collective, including Richie Ishida and Jake Tween - percussion, Glenn Young - bass, keyboards, percussion and production, Micky Petyt - lead guitar. Plus Rosie Smith on the flute. Wendy also plays guitar and keyboards on some of the recordings for the first time. Our featured MP3 this month are- "Another Year" -a track from forthcoming CD which features Rosie on flute and Micky on bass and guitar. And "Earthfire" our ode to the elements from our debut CD "Luluz Tutu".
